ASL Moot Court teams compete in the 2016 National Energy and Sustainability Competition

Two teams of Appalachian School of Law students traveled to the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown, WV earlier this month to compete in the 2016 National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition.  The three day competition pits teams of two or three students from law schools across the country against each other arguing a hypothetical case involving energy law.  This year’s problem was complex, encompassing issues of agency deference related to two major federal acts, the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.

ASL’s two teams, one of second year law students and one of third year law students, made a strong showing, arguing adeptly on both sides of this complex problem.  The 3L team, made up of Ross Chapman, Laney Comer, and Heather Thomas, advanced to the round of 16.  While the 2L team, made up of Peter Bowen, Tyler Adams, and Aaron Gillespie, did not advance, their performance was excellent and the intensive work both teams put into their arguments was evident at every stage of the competition. Please join me in congratulating this year’s competitors as you see them around campus.IMG_0460
